A Wave of Android Smartphones Outsells Apple

Orchestrated by carrier Verizon Wireless, aggressive promotions such as this one for Motorola's (MOT) Droid smartphone, plus a blitz of direct mail, newspaper, and TV ads, and two-for-one deals on Android-powered handsets, lifted first-quarter sales of smartphones based on Google's (GOOG) Android operating system above sales of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone for the first time, market researcher NPD Group reported on May 10.
Android-powered phones accounted for 28 percent of all smartphones sold in the U.S., exceeding Apple's 21 percent share during the quarter, NPD said. Research in Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry models led the category with a 36 percent share.
Leapfrogging Apple is an important milestone—and not just for Android, an open-source software developed by a consortium of companies led by Google. NPD's report also shows how quickly Verizon Wireless has become a central player in the fast-growing market for the pocket computers known as smartphones. In the first quarter, Verizon customers bought 30 percent of all smartphones sold in the U.S., nearly equaling the 32 percent share of AT&T (T), which has an exclusive contract to sell the iPhone, according to the report. AT&T also sells an Android handset from Motorola and plans to carry an upcoming Android smartphone from Dell (DELL).
Verizon no longer seen as desperate
Until recently, Verizon was an also-ran in the smartphone market. It carried the BlackBerry, but didn't have a breakthrough consumer-oriented smartphone to compete with the iPhone. Analysts were calling for Verizon to strike a deal with Apple to distribute the iPhone. Last December, Verizon said it had effected network upgrades that would enable its network to handle extra traffic should Apple decide to expand the number of carriers authorized to sell iPhones.
Last November's launch of the Android-powered Droid improved Verizon's fortunes in the smartphone market. The Droid, with its sleek design and ability to run many downloadable apps—and backed by a highly visible marketing campaign—is helping Verizon catch up. In the past several months, Verizon Wireless has proven that if it does get the iPhone, "it won't be out of some pressing need," says Tavis McCourt, an analyst at Morgan Keegan & Co. (RF), who has an "outperform" rating on Apple shares.
Rising shipments of Android phones could also spur developers to create additional apps for the platform. "Market share is a contributing factor to which operating system developers want to support," says Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD. Excitement over $1 trillion euro plan fades, euro slips
The emergency plan -- the biggest since G20 leaders threw money at the global economy following the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 -- impressed markets with its sheer size and sparked a spectacular rally in world stocks and the euro.Yet financial markets turned cautious when they reopened for business in Asia on Tuesday, with investors concerned that the plan was not a long-term solution to problems plaguing the 11-year old single currency area.In a sobering note, the International Monetary Fund said that even though Greece's public debt was sustainable over the medium term, the nation whose debt woes spurred the unprecedented euro zone action, faced plenty of risks.Moody's credit ratings agency also warned it might downgrade Portugal's debt rating and further cut Greece's to junk status, noting the contagion effect of Greece's crisis on other euro zone members.
"Contagion has spread from Greece -- historically a weaker credit in the context of the euro zone -- to sovereigns with stronger credit metrics like Portugal, Ireland and Spain," Moody's said.
MORE PROBLEMS AHEAD?
Stock markets started with modest gains, but turned negative with Tokyo shares down 0.9 percent and markets elsewhere in Asia-Pacific down 1 percent, a far cry from a nearly 4 percent jump in Wall Street blue chips overnight.
The euro slipped 0.5 percent against the yen and traded 0.2 percent down from late U.S. trade against the dollar after it climbed as much as 3 percent on the rescue news.
"Even though one of the worst scenarios -- a Greek default -- has been avoided for now, in many ways solving the bigger problems have simply been postponed and new issues could emerge in places such as Portugal and Spain," said Nagayuki Yamagishi, a strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities.
In another sign of market caution, safe-haven U.S. Treasuries stabilized in Asian trade after Monday's plunge.
Markets initially cheered the rescue plan as a sign that for the first time in the six months of a deepening debt crisis, European leaders appear to have got ahead of the curve with decisive action.
But the deal left many longer-term questions about whether Europe's weakest economies can manage their debt and how the European Union can develop more coherent economic and fiscal policies to underpin the single currency.
With many ations saddled with record deficits after they pumped trillions of dollars into their economies during the global crisis, officials from Washington to Beijing applauded Europe's efforts to keep the crisis contained within its bounds.
WAKE-UP CALLIn Japan, the world's most indebted industrialized nation, government officials warned Tokyo could no longer take investors' willingness to bankroll its spending for granted.
Japan so far has had no trouble financing its deficits, even as its public debt is forecast to reach 200 percent of GDP within a year or so, thanks to a vast pool of domestic savings and reliance on domestic investors to foot the bill.
But this could change, Strategy Minister Yoshito Sengoku warned, saying financial markets may start taking note of Japan's debt burden, while Finance Minister Naoto Kan said next year's new borrowing should not exceed this year's new bond sales.
"Japan needs to draw a lesson from Greece's problems and to take steps on fiscal discipline with a stronger sense of crisis than before," he told a news conference on Tuesday.
European leaders sprung into action and cobbled together a package that dwarfed the 110 billion euro rescue for Greece after interbank lending started freezing up on Friday in an ominous reminder of the Lehman crisis.
With memories still fresh of how the U.S. subprime market's collapse spiraled into a global financial and economic crisis, Europe acted out of concern that after pummeling profligate Greece, markets could take aim at other fiscally weak nations, threatening the stability of the whole euro area.
Concerns that credit markets could freeze again also appeared to have forced the European Central Bank's hand, which joined the rescue with a pledge to buy government bonds -- a "nuclear option" it had resisted for months.
Euro zone central banks immediately began implementing the ECB's part of the deal, buying government bonds in the open market.
The move impressed analysts just as much as the size of the 750 billion euro package of standby funds and loan guarantees that could be tapped by euro zone governments shut out of credit markets.
That amount includes 250 billion euros that the IMF could contribute, even though its No. 2 official John Lipsky said his institution had not earmarked any money for euro zone countries and help would be provided on a case-by-case basis.
Fears that the crisis could spread well beyond Greece, helped overcome initial resistance in Germany and other nations to a bailout after Athens had for years misled its EU peers about the true state of its finances.
"This package serves to strengthen and protect our common currency," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters in Berlin.
Germany and the Netherlands, sticklers for budget discipline, insisted the rescue program was linked to the same kind of draconian austerity measures already imposed on Greece.
Dutch Finance Ministe Jan Kees de Jager told parliament Spain and Portugal had made a commitment to cut their budgets substantially in 2010 and 2011 as a condition for the safety net. EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said both states must commit themselves to further savings this year too.

Future of Newspapers
Have you ever lay in the sun, enjoying the entertainment of reading a newspaper? Have you ever sat in an underground railway, killing your boring time by turning a newspaper? If you have made it, there is no doubt that you may not deny the importance of newspapers as a popular medium.
The first reason underlying my judgment is that newspapers provide us with great convenience. Though the advent of electric media like televisions and computers offer us another way to obtaining information, their generation by electricity circumscribes their uses indoors. On the other hand, newspapers may be carried wherever we intend to. In addition, their small size and light weight will surely spare our effort to take them.
Another incomparable advantage of newspapers lies in their non-pollution. It may be said without fear of exaggeration that almost all those electronic media do harm to people’s health.Take televisions for example：exposures to radiations, a kind of pollution, from them in the long run will undermine people’s health, and especially for pregnant women. The radiation may even affect the baby to some extent. The same case can also be found in computers without any difficulty. Newspapers, by contrast, are made of natural materials. Therefore no pollution will be given off nor are people subjected to the risk of illness when they read a newspaper.
It is true that electronic media also have some merits superior to newspapers. They can give us more direct information, not only by words but by sounds and pictures as well. But regarding newspapers as a medium of past is an apparent understanding,far from the truth.
According to what has been analyzed above, newspapers have some exclusive advantages compared with other media,which affirm their popularity and will keep it on and on.

Choice
Just as there are distinct differences between being a small fish is a big pond and a big fish in a small pond, so it is with working as a subordinate in a large enterprise and presiding in a small firm.
With the former, you can derive a deep sense of satisfaction from being a member of a well-known organization such as General Motors, or the Bell Telephone System. You have the opportunities of learning from experienced executives and knowing about the standard working process.
With the latter, you have greater responsibilities and your decision may bring immediate effect. Normally you are expose to various experiences and expected to do a great many thing without much help or guidance.
Personally I prefer to work in a small enterprise, where my prospect of promotion is good as long as I work hard. To tell the truth, I'd rather become a well-known and important figure within my own small pond.

My Hobby
My hobby is fishing. I am fond of going fishing, for it is both interesting and iastructive-It tempers my willpower. Last Sunday I went fishing with my friend, He Ping. We started at daybreak. After three hours’ cycling, we arrived at the outskirts of Hefei and came to a stream. The water is clear and clean. One can see fish swimming. The meadow sprinkled with buttercups slopes to the stream. It is a good place for fishing.In a few minutes everything was ready. Putting the bait of earthworms on the hook, dropping the hue into the strum, we sat there fishing with rod in hand. An hour passed. I did not catch a single fish. I lifted the fishing rod time and again. Time and again I was disappointed. There was no fish on the hook. On the other side of the stream, He Ping had caught several fish, one of which was very big.“How comes it that you catch fish casily while it is so difficult for me?” I asked.“it’s easy. Only you need Io be patient.” He Ping answered. “Make sure that you lift the fishing rod when the whole flat has sunk. I’m sure a fish will greet you on the hook.”After a while the floats were swinging. I kept my breath and waked. The floats became still again. “Come on my hook, dear fish.” I was saying to myself. In a moment the floats swang again and then sank abruptly, Just at that moment I lifted my fishing rod. To my delight I caught a fish. The Optimal Link State Routing Protocol (OLSR) is developed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). It operates as a table driven and proactive protocol. OLSR is simple but performs well in MANET. This Master thesis deals with the implementation of basic OLSR and improved SRMSB-OLSR under Linux OS.Considering the background of mobile ad Lacoste Polo Shirts hoc network and principles of OLSR routing protocol, a concrete scheme about OLSR implementation under Linux OS was presented. In addition, several key technologies to solve difficulties encountered during the implementation of OLSR were detailed. Why My Spoken Enslish is Poor?
When we study English, we learn to listen, speak, read and write. Of these abilities, speaking is the most important. As we all know, the fundamental means of commUnication is speaking. Onlyby speaking to each other directly can two people exchange their ideas freely and efficiently. This is especially true in modern times when we live in a “global village”, where joint ventures and overseas tourism become commonplace. Many employers in joint ventures speak English, so do most of the tourists. Many difficulties will arise if we can’t express ourselves fluently in English.
In spite of my awareness of its importance, I seldom find chances to practice and improve my oral English. So, I am still very weak with regard to this respect. one reason is that my pronunciation and intonation aren’t good enough. The other is that I am so shy that I am always too nervous to find the exact words to express my ideas and feelings. As a result the best way for me to do is to remain silent when others are practicing and making great progress in their oral English everyday.
Now I am attaching much more importance to oral English and I have made up my mind to seize every opportunity to practice. I begin to participate actively in all kinds of English activities, such as going to “English Corners”, talking in English with my classmates and with native speakers. “Nothing is difficult in the world if you really put your heart to it.” as the Chinese saying goes. If I can build up my confidence, if I am not afraid of losing face any more, if I really work hard on it, I am sure my oral English will be excellent someday.

The power control technology is one of the most important technologies in WCDMA system. The capacity and quality of the system is deeply dependent on reverse-link power control, so it is very important. Inner loop power control technology is a quick close-loop power control technology. It works in the physical layer between the base station and the mobile handsets. The mobile control its own transmited power based on the commands send from the base station. The base station generates command by comparing its own transmited power and SIR with the target transmited power and SIR.Combining hardware and software studies, this paper introduces three methods to improve the mobile inner loop power control performance, which are good RF circuit match, accurate mobile RF power calibration and precise RF temperature frequency temperature power compensation. From hardware studies, mobile RF performance is based on good matching. If not, the transmited power range from -56dBm to 24dBm can’t meet requirement, then no inner loop power control can be done.From software studies, accurate RF power calibration can improve inner loop power control performance in segment E, F, G, H obviously. RF power amplifier temperature will vary quickly according to the output power and call time, while mobile need to work in different temperatures. Precise RF temp frequency compensation and temp power compensation can help to make up it, then to improve inner loop control in segments E, F efficiently. Test results show, inner loop power control performance meets all the requ-irements by appling these three methods.

Talking about teachers. My JC classmates often offend them because as a whole we are very distracted and always fool around in class. Once my Economics teacher actually stormed out of the class because of that. As an Economics Representative, i have to take up the responsibility of finding her (she deliberately hide away somewhere during the next lesson, as though she is having a strike), eventually i found her in the "student prohibited" corner of the library instead of the Lacoste Polo Shirts. She refused to forgive us at first but i wrote a letter of apology on behalf of the class before things are back to normal again. As is shown in the chart, in the last century, world population has increased dramatically, doubling in every-shortening cycles. In 1930, world population stood at 2 billion, and a brief 48 years later, it reached over 4 billion. But in 2001, it increased another 2 billion in less than half of 48 years. Population explosion has become a serious problem.
Population growth has imposed enormous pressure on world food supplies, making it difficult to avoid hunger and starvation on a large scale. In addition to food shortage, the growing population poses a threat to the environment. Land resources are reducing very fast and raw materials are being consumed at an increasing rate. At the same time, overpopulation affects the quality of life due to the inadequate supply of land.
It is clear that the problem of population needs careful attention. Facing the world population explosion in the near future, we must carry out the birth control program in order to save the mankind and save the world.

story
The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend slapped me in the face."
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.
After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend saved my life."
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"
The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."
